Ordained to Something Larger

You are ordained to something larger. We are ordaining you to ministry, and that means servant leadership. Never abnegate your responsibility by pretending that the leadership of God’s Church is nothing to do with you.

We are ordaining you to serve God in committees, activities and organisations. Don’t make excuses that you are somehow different and can run your life chaotically and need be accountable to nobody.

We are ordaining you to be involved in evangelism, and to tell people the Good News of Jesus Christ in word and deed. Every Christian is called to do this, but you have a special responsibility. Don't be pushed into a definition of mission so wide as to be meaningless.

Don’t let anybody patronise you into thinking that the Word of God is made up of sacred stories for our community alone. Instead see it as having authority for all people, at all times and in all places. So preach it.

We are not ordaining you to a specifically sacramental ministry because such ordination is found nowhere in the Bible. Avoid rituals and rites that have no meaning. Break through dead liturgies, and bring new life to God’s people.

Don’t let community become an idol. Instead comfort the afflicted, yet afflict the comfortable.

Don’t be unnecessarily offensive, but remember that if everybody speaks well of you, then you are not following your calling.

We are ordaining you to nothing less than the most important thing in the world: serving the Living God.
